Abstract: This study examines a previously unpublished Latin inscription preserved in the stone artifacts depot of the Gaziantep Zeugma Mosaic Museum. Although the exact context is unclear, the inscription must have been erected to commemorate a construction activity in which Publius Iulius Satto and Publius Victorinius Mercator, who served as contubernales in the Roman army, were likely involved. The inscription records that these individuals served in the first cohors within the centuria of the primus pilus. The tradition of naming centuriae after their commanders (centurio) disappeared from the 3rd century CE onwards; instead, as is the case in this inscription, they began to be named according to the duty title within the centuria. Since this title is given as primus pilus in the inscription, it is understood that these two contubernales, Satto and Mercator, were in the first centuria of the first cohors, the most prestigious unit in the legion. The inscription does not specify to which legion this unit was attached; however, it was most probably one of the legions temporarily stationed in the region and attested by numerous stamped tiles. Both the Celtic origin of the cognomen Satto and the exclusive concentration of the name Victorinius in the Rhineland point to a likely Gallo-Germanic origin for these contubernales. Based on the naming convention of the centuria, the inscription is dated to the 3rd century CE.

Keywords: Latin Inscriptions, Primus pilus, Cohors Prima, Zeugma Mosaic Museum, Roman Army

Abstract: The subject of this article is a fifteen-line inscription (Figs. 1-4) on the front face of a marble block discovered in the Şuhut district of Afyon and currently preserved in the Afyon Museum. The findspot of the stone belonged to the territory of the city of Synnada, located in Phrygia during antiquity. The inscription is an agonistic epigram consisting of three distichs honoring a successful trumpeter. In the epigram, a trumpeter named Antigonos is praised. He is known to have participated in trumpet competitions and achieved success while still a child. In later periods, he also gained victories in the Actian and Pythian games. It is emphasized that Antigonos glorified his homeland – which is not named in the epigram but is likely Synnada based on the findspot – through his achievements. We include this inscription within the group of agonistic inscriptions known from Synnada to date, some of which are also in the form of epigrams. This marks the first time a trumpeter has been documented in Synnada. Based on current epigraphic and numismatic evidence, the only major festival and games identified in Synnada to date is the great festival known as the “Hadrianeia Panathenaia”. This inscription honoring the trumpeter was also likely erected during a celebration of the Hadrianeia Panathenaia agon in the city. Due to its letterforms and content, the epigram can be dated to the same period as similar epigrams from Synnada, such as those of Thallos and Aristainetos (see the appendix) -namely, the first half of the 3rd century CE.

Keywords: Agonistic Epigram, Afyon Museum, Synnada, Pythia, Actia, Salpinktes/Trumpeter

Abstract: This article presents the epigraphic and historical analysis of seven votive inscriptions preserved in the courtyard of the Eskişehir Eti Archaeology Museum. Although these inscriptions were identified within the borders of Eskişehir Province, their exact findspots remain unknown. It is therefore assumed that the objects may originate from the territories of settlements located within the provincial boundaries that existed at the time the inscriptions were produced; where necessary, the inscriptions have been evaluated within their own internal context. The first inscription was dedicated to the “Just Gods” (Theoi Dikaioi) by a komarkhes and priest of a settlement. Although parallels associated with Hosios kai Dikaios are known, this expression is attested here for the first time in the region as denoting a group of deities. The following three inscriptions are dedicated respectively to Hosios kai Dikaios, Theos Hypsistos, and Men. The fifth inscription is a fragment dedicated by the inhabitants of Doiga. The sixth inscription is dedicated to the local deity of a settlement named Dobana. They are introduced into the literature as two new toponyms. The final inscription is likewise fragmentary and preserves only part of the name of the dedicator. All inscriptions are dated to the 2nd–4th centuries CE and reflect the religious diversity of the Eskişehir region in antiquity.

Keywords: Theoi Dikaioi, Men, Theos Hypsistos, Hosios kai Dikaios, Komarkhes, Doiga

Abstract: This study presents a newly discovered inscription from Magnesia ad Maeandrum, found in 2021 and dated to the late 1st century CE or early 2nd century CE. The text preserves the public actions of a woman named Tryphosa, who honoured the memory of her husband Democharis through gestures of civic generosity and religious responsibility. The boule and the demos honoured Democharis for his inherited civic standing, the dignity of his character and his service as agoranomos. After his death, Tryphosa, identified as his wife and as a priestess, undertook several initiatives that affected the civic community at large. She set up a monument in his honour, financed distributions of olive oil in the gymnasia and provided funds for the philosebastos boule in accordance with his instructions. The inscription places commemoration, religious office and civic benefaction within the same public setting and makes clear that Tryphosa was the central figure in turning the memory of Democharis into visible civic action.

Keywords: Tryphosa, Democharis, Oil, Agoranomos, Priestess, Magnesia ad Maeandrum

Abstract: This article presents a compilation of nine unpublished funerary inscriptions discovered in the territory of Nikaia. The first four inscriptions were discovered in the modern-day villages of Akçakoca and Hayrettin, located in the Pamukova District of Sakarya Province. These villages lie within the territory of the ancient settlement of Terbos. The remaining inscriptions were found in the eastern and southern parts of the territory of Nikaia. Notably, one of these latter inscriptions revealed the Cassius family’s connections to the rural hinterland. The inscriptions contain the following: 1) Tomb of Aurelius(?) Demas, 2) Tomb of Khrestos and his wife Maxima, 3) Tomb of an unknown person, 4) Tomb of an unknown person, 5) Tomb of Aristainetos(?), 6) Tomb of Claudia Perigenis, 7) Tomb of Hieronis, 8) Tomb of Longina, 9) Tomb of a man and his wife. In addition to the newly discovered inscriptions, two previously published inscriptions have been corrected (corrigendum): 10) Tomb of Eia and her husband Agathokles, 11) Tomb of Hermione and her husband Timotheos. The inscriptions are dated to the Roman Imperial period.

Keywords: Nicaea, Terbos, Cassii, Claudius/Claudia, Anthroponym, Epitaph

Abstract: This study presents two Latin inscriptions currently exhibited in Sanatçılar Parkı in Ataköy, Istanbul, which originally belonged to the Roman Imperial marble quarries of Docimium (modern Iscehisar, Afyon). One of the inscriptions was previously discovered in the Bacakale sector of the Docimium quarries and was published in 1991. Although the other inscription remains unpublished, it was most likely brought to Istanbul together with the former piece. After situating these fragments within the broader corpus of quarry inscriptions, they are re-examined here in light of the earlier studies by J. C. Fant, M. Christol, and Th. Drew-Bear, with particular attention to their epigraphic and historical contexts. The inscriptions illustrate the use of standard abbreviations designating quarry sections (bracchium, locus), the workshop engineer (officina), and the quarry engineer (caesura), thereby providing evidence for the complex bureaucratic system that regulated production and transport. The paper also addresses the transfer of these inscriptions to Istanbul, while expressing concerns about the ongoing threats that modern quarrying activities pose to archaeological evidence.

Abstract: This study presents three inscriptions from Phaselis. The first, a fragmentary limestone statue base discovered west of Hadrianus’s Gate during the 2017 excavation season, is tentatively attributed to Emperor Marcus Aurelius. Although the imperial titulature is only partially preserved, paleographic analysis points to similarities to a securely dated dedication to Lucius Verus discovered in proximate context, suggesting a possible attribution to the period of joint rule (166-169 CE). The second inscription, documented in 2012 near the acropolis gateway, preserves two chronologically distinct epigraphic phases. Phase A comprises an original eighteen-line carved honorific text for Aurelia Apphia, a member of the Phaselite civic elite who served as priestess of the Roman Imperial Cult and endowed the Palladeios Agon and associated prize competition (themis). The dedicator is restored as Apion, whose precise relationship to Apphia remains uncertain. Phase B consists of painted inscription (dipinto) preserved in five lines executed over plaster and fresco decoration, identified as a biblical citation from the Gospel of John (1:1, 1:3), reflecting Christian appropriation during Late Antiquity. The monument’s tertiary incorporation into the acropolis fortification walls attests to profound urban transformations at Phaselis during the Late Antique Period, providing critical evidence for civic benefaction, religious change, and spatial reconfiguration.

Keywords: Phaselis, Marcus Aurelius, Dedicatory/Honorific Inscriptions, Dipinto

Cl. Constantius, Fl. Arcadius, II.

Abstract: This paper presents the editio princeps of a newly discovered agonistic inscription from Attouda, commemorating Marcus Aurelius Eutykhos II, recorded as victor in the men’s pankration at games designated as Olympia. The inscription, carved on a marble base unearthed during the 2025 excavations in the area known as Aşağı Mezarlık (“Lower Cemetery,” cadastral block 126, parcel 82), constitutes the fourth known pankration text from Attouda. To date, eleven agonistic inscriptions, most of them relating to combat sports (pankration and pale), have been documented from the site, marking an unusually prominent epigraphic interest in athletic commemoration for a modest inland city. The new text, taken together with the three previously published pankratiasts (M. Aurelius Attikos Alexandros, M. Aurelius Karminios Kataplous, and Alexandros, grandson of Attikos), points to a sustained local tradition of athletic training and success over a period of roughly five decades (ca. 215-265 CE). Onomastic evidence places this group in the post–Constitutio Antoniniana era, when the gentilicium Aurelius became widespread across the eastern provinces. The inscription of Eutykhos, with its concise formula and absence of civic honorifics, illustrates both the prestige attached to these contests and Attouda’s participation in the broader agonistic networks of Roman Asia Minor most plausibly at the level of regional isolympic festivals rather than the Panhellenic games.

Keywords: Attouda, Phrygia, Karia, Agonistic Inscription, Pankration, Constitutio Antoniniana

Abstract: A newly discovered inscription from Antiokheia Paralios, commonly known as Antiochia ad Cragum, commemorates an athlete named Aur(elius) Salvianus, who won the pankration competition in the boys’ category during the first celebration of the themis Leonideios, established by Aur(elius) Leonidas. The inscription proves a crucial role in resolving uncertainties surrounding the themis, and significantly enhances the understanding of its nature and scope. It offers fresh interpretations of expressions found in other related inscriptions and it enables more precise inferences regarding the founding process of the themis and the life of its founder, Leonidas. Moreover, it establishes a clear timeline for both the founding and concluding dates of the themis. Additionally, it provides the basis for essential corrections and updates to previously published inscriptions related to the themis Leonideios.
