Abstract: Although various cults are attested at Antiokheia Paralios, commonly known as Antiochia ad Cragum, the precise locations of their sanctuaries remain largely uncertain. Three newly discovered honorific inscriptions from the city provide further evidence for the previously attested cult of Zeus. One inscription honours an individual named Neon, who served as a priest of Zeus, while the preserved text and epigraphic context of the other two likewise point to the priesthood of Zeus. Since two of these inscriptions were discovered within the temenos of the structure known as the Peristyle Temple, this structure can now be associated with the cult of Zeus and regarded as a strong candidate for the location of his sanctuary. This proposal provides a new basis for reconsidering the possible spatial organization of the epigraphically attested cults of the Augusti and Dea Roma, as well as their relationship with the cult of Zeus.

Abstract: This article adopts a holistic approach to evaluating the new finds unearthed during the 2023–2024 excavation seasons at the Central Harbor Structures of Phaselis, together with epigraphic documents from the 2015 surveys and earlier research. The study focuses primarily on three inscribed metal finds of the Late Antique and Byzantine periods (two protective rings and a bronze reliquary cross), unearthed in the Central Harbor Structures and in a shop outside the harbor area. In addition, three inscribed stone fragments recovered from various parts of the city and from earlier excavations and surveys are analyzed with respect to their epigraphic content, as they provide comparative data on the religious practices and urban onomastics of the period. The recovery of the inscribed amuletic metal finds from contexts such as shops, workshops and storerooms documents that, in Late Antique Phaselis, religious and apotropaic practices extended beyond institutional architecture and formed an integral part of commercial and everyday life. Traces of uninterrupted use of the Central Harbor from the 4th century BCE to the mid-7th century CE, together with subsequent architectural adaptations, demonstrate that the area retained its functional flexibility even during periods of urban contraction. The Middle Byzantine reliquary cross from the shop sector further confirms that habitation in the area continued into later periods. In conclusion, the study sheds light not only on the commercial functions of the Central Harbor Structures of Phaselis but also on their multilayered character, in which socio-religious practices were intertwined, and on their functional continuity over time.

Abstract: This study critically examines, from the standpoint of numismatic method, the work entitled Aigai Sikkeleri (Coins of Aigai), published in 2026, which presents the coins found during the excavations at Aigai between 2004 and 2016. Of the 1,520 coins recovered, 1,120 were catalogued and evaluated, while the remaining 400 were excluded because of their poor condition. This evaluation, however, is flawed and inadequate in terms of numismatic method. The work provides only descriptive information and statistical data on the excavation coins, presented in tables and lists, supplemented by general information on the coinage of Aigai. The coins are assessed only in general terms, and their find spots and excavation contexts are not taken into account. The hoards are merely described; rather than being evaluated separately, they are incorporated into the catalogue and thus removed from their context. All of this is, in fact, consistent with the stated aim of the study, which may be summarized as “introducing the coins and providing statistical information about them”. A study of excavation coins, however, is expected not only to identify and describe the coins but also to evaluate them within their archaeological and historical context, and thereby to shed light on the social, cultural, and economic history of the city in which they were found. By disregarding these aspects, the work does not go beyond a mere catalogue.

Abstract: This study examines the Roman Period milestones found in and around Savatra. The inscriptions are evaluated from epigraphic, historical, and historical-geographical perspectives. The milestones show that road repair activities continued around Savatra, especially in the first half of the 3rd century CE. The milestone dated to the reign of Severus Alexander records Lucius Bromius, an otherwise unattested governor of Galatia. Equally significant is the presence at Savatra of a milestone of Maximinus Thrax, an emperor subjected to damnatio memoriae, the traces of which are visible on the stone itself it shows that road works in the region continued during his short reign. This inscription also attests to the activity of Claudius Aradius Rufinus in southern Galatia. The inscriptions of Philippus Arabs and his son point to a further phase of repair around Savatra and Aksaklı. Taken together, these data indicate that Savatra was an important centre on the Galatia-Lycaonia frontier in the Roman Period. The study argues that the milestones provide new evidence for the historical geography of Eastern Lycaonia and for possible road connections around Savatra.

Keywords: Savatra, Eastern Lycaonia, Historical Geography, Roman Milestones, Governors of Galatia, Road Connections

Jahrhundert n.
Abstract: This article examines a new Latin honorific inscription documented during the 2024 excavation season along the East Street of Perge, carved on a block reused as spolia. The inscription honors Emperor Diocletian with the title Restitutor Orbis Terrarum and identifies the dedicator as Aurelius Heraclida, who holds the titles vir egregius, ducenarius, and procurator Lyciae-Pamphyliae. The study first evaluates the epigraphic features of the inscription before discussing the political and ideological background of the title Restitutor Orbis Terrarum within the context of Diocletianic restoration ideology. The identity of Aurelius Heraclida is analyzed in detail using the Prosopography of the Later Roman Empire (PLRE) alongside other textual sources, presenting compelling evidence that he may be identical to the vir perfectissimus and dux Aurelius Heraclida known from an inscription in Udruh (Arabia province). The variations in honorific titles between the two documents are assessed within the framework of Late Roman career progression and rank hierarchy. Furthermore, Heraclida’s sphere of authority is reinterpreted in light of the administrative and military structure of the province of Lycia-Pamphylia in the late 3rd century CE. Consequently, this study provides new data regarding provincial administration, military-administrative reforms, and the reception of imperial ideology in Asia Minor during the early Tetrarchy.

Genişletilmiş Öz: Bu çalışma, Perge’nin Doğu Caddesi’nde 2024 yılı kazı sezonunda ortaya çıkarılan ve devşirme malzeme olarak yeniden kullanılmış bir blok üzerinde tespit edilen yeni bir Latince onur yazıtını incelemektedir. Yazıt, İmparator Diocletianus’u Restitutor Orbis Terrarum unvanıyla onurlandırmakta ve adak sahibi olarak vir egregius, ducenarius et procurator Lyciae-Pamphyliae unvanlarını taşıyan Aurelius Heraclida’yı zikretmektedir. Makalede öncelikle yazıtın epigrafik özellikleri değerlendirilmiş, ardından Diocletianus’un restorasyon ideolojisi bağlamında Restitutor Orbis Terrarum unvanının siyasi ve ideolojik arka planı tartışılmıştır. Yazıtta adı geçen Aurelius Heraclida’nın kimliği, Prosopography of the Later Roman Empire (PLRE) ve diğer yazılı kaynaklar ışığında ayrıntılı biçimde incelenmiş; özellikle Arabia Eyaleti’ndeki Udruh’dan bilinen bir yazıtta geçen vir perfectissimus et dux Aurelius Heraclida ile aynı kişi olduğu yönünde güçlü kanıtlar ortaya konmaya çalışılmıştır. Her iki belge arasındaki unvan farklılıkları, Geç Roma Dönemi’ndeki kariyer ilerlemesi ve rütbe hiyerarşisi çerçevesinde değerlendirilmiştir. Buna göre Heraclida’nın Perge yazıtında taşıdığı vir egregius ile Udruh yazıtındaki vir perfectissimus unvanları kendisinin atlı sınıfına mensup olduğunu göstermektedir. Heraclida, Tetrarşi Dönemi’nin başlarında Perge’de ducenarius procurator olarak bulunmasının ardından MS 3. yüzyılın sonunda Udruh’ta dux olarak görev almıştır. Burada Legio VI Ferrata Fidelis Constans’a ait castra’nın yeniden inşasını üstlendiği görülmektedir.

Abstract: This study focuses on a group of stamped Rhodian amphorae housed in the Silifke Museum (Mersin, Türkiye) from archaeological and epigraphic perspectives. During the Hellenistic Period, Rhodes emerged as a dominant commercial power in the Mediterranean, distinguished by a highly standardized and systematically organized stamping practice that remained in use from the late 4th century BCE until the mid 1st century BCE. The research concentrates on the identification and chronological assessment of the eponyms and fabricants recorded on the stamps. By cross-referencing the information gathered from the stamps with established corpora and digital databases, the study establishes a refined chronological framework for the assemblage. The results indicate that a substantial proportion of the amphorae and handles are dated to the 2nd century BCE, corresponding to the peak phase of Rhodian commercial activity. The principal contribution of this paper lies in proposing a new association between an eponym and a fabricant, not recorded in the existing scholarly literature. This new pairing offers valuable insights into the organization of Rhodian workshops and the administrative mechanisms governing amphora production. Furthermore, by presenting a local museum collection to the international scholarly com¬munity, this study contributes to the refinement of the chronological and prosopographical frameworks essential for a more nuanced understanding of the Hellenistic economy.

Abstract: This article presents an inscribed bronze votive bowl discovered in 2019 within a building complex associated with the Sebasteion (Room M5) at the acropolis of Arykanda. The multifunctional nature of the building complex, along with the associated finds, indicates that the area served as a hybrid space where ritual practices and daily life intertwined. Dating to the 2nd–3rd centuries CE, the inscribed bowl provides the only evidence to date of the goddess Demeter in the city’s pantheon. The bowl extends the geographical distribution of the cult of Demeter in Lycia eastward and into the interior. The incised inscription on the bowl bears the epithet Megale Thea (Great Goddess), hitherto unattested for Demeter in Lycia. This epithet reflects the rhetoric of religious exaltation prevalent in Roman Imperial Asia Minor. The dedicator, Theo[d]amos, identifies himself as an oikonomos (steward/administrator), suggesting he may have been an official attached to either the city or a cult organisation.

Keywords: Arykanda, Demeter, Megale Thea, Bronze Bowl, Oikonomos

Öz: Makale, 2019 yılında Arykanda akropolisinde, Sebasteion’a bağlı bir yapı kompleksinde (M5 No.lu mekân) keşfedilen yazıtlı bronz bir adak kabını tanıtmaktadır.

Abstract: This study examines a previously unpublished Latin inscription preserved in the stone artifacts depot of the Gaziantep Zeugma Mosaic Museum. Although the exact context is unclear, the inscription must have been erected to commemorate a construction activity in which Publius Iulius Satto and Publius Victorinius Mercator, who served as contubernales in the Roman army, were likely involved. The inscription records that these individuals served in the first cohors within the centuria of the primus pilus. The tradition of naming centuriae after their commanders (centurio) disappeared from the 3rd century CE onwards; instead, as is the case in this inscription, they began to be named according to the duty title within the centuria. Since this title is given as primus pilus in the inscription, it is understood that these two contubernales, Satto and Mercator, were in the first centuria of the first cohors, the most prestigious unit in the legion. The inscription does not specify to which legion this unit was attached; however, it was most probably one of the legions temporarily stationed in the region and attested by numerous stamped tiles. Both the Celtic origin of the cognomen Satto and the exclusive concentration of the name Victorinius in the Rhineland point to a likely Gallo-Germanic origin for these contubernales. Based on the naming convention of the centuria, the inscription is dated to the 3rd century CE.

Abstract: The subject of this article is a fifteen-line inscription (Figs. 1-4) on the front face of a marble block discovered in the Şuhut district of Afyon and currently preserved in the Afyon Museum. The findspot of the stone belonged to the territory of the city of Synnada, located in Phrygia during antiquity. The inscription is an agonistic epigram consisting of three distichs honoring a successful trumpeter. In the epigram, a trumpeter named Antigonos is praised. He is known to have participated in trumpet competitions and achieved success while still a child. In later periods, he also gained victories in the Actian and Pythian games. It is emphasized that Antigonos glorified his homeland – which is not named in the epigram but is likely Synnada based on the findspot – through his achievements. We include this inscription within the group of agonistic inscriptions known from Synnada to date, some of which are also in the form of epigrams. This marks the first time a trumpeter has been documented in Synnada. Based on current epigraphic and numismatic evidence, the only major festival and games identified in Synnada to date is the great festival known as the “Hadrianeia Panathenaia”. This inscription honoring the trumpeter was also likely erected during a celebration of the Hadrianeia Panathenaia agon in the city. Due to its letterforms and content, the epigram can be dated to the same period as similar epigrams from Synnada, such as those of Thallos and Aristainetos (see the appendix) -namely, the first half of the 3rd century CE.
