Abstract: <\/strong>The aim of this paper is to investigate the defensive layout of Stratonikeia from a new inscription that records a city gate, a military unit, and an emblem and indicates the direction of a defence division of the city. The current paper presents an epigraphical view of the defence system of Stratonikeia in Karia and discusses this system. Stratonikeia is within the village of Eskihisar in the district of Yata\u011fan, in the province of Mu\u011fla. The new village carrying the same name has been rebuilt several kilometers away. There are the walls of three Pyrgoi<\/em> surrounded Stratonikeia, while the presence of a fourth Pyrgos<\/em> is uncertain. The coal mining in Yata\u011fan may have destroyed its remains. The citizens of Stratonikeia built the four city gates: the North Gate, a modern appellation, Mese Pyle<\/em> (the Middle Gate), Tripylon<\/em>, and Mylasike Pyle<\/em> (the Mylasa Gate). The city might have been divided into three or into four zones for defence. The emblems of the zones represented the units of the city\u2019s army, with the Stratonicean Army comprising the Herakles, Rhopalon, Elephas, and Kapros units. Astragon and Tendeba were part of the defence system of Stratonikeia. Livius only attests to the castles in the Khora<\/em> of Stratonikeia.<\/p>\r\n

Yata\u011fan\u2019da k\u00f6m\u00fcr madencili\u011fi kal\u0131nt\u0131lar\u0131n\u0131 yok etmi\u015f olabilir. Stratonikeial\u0131lar d\u00f6rt kent kap\u0131s\u0131 in\u015fa etmi\u015ftir: Modern bir isim olan Kuzey Kap\u0131s\u0131, Mese Pyle<\/em> (Orta Kap\u0131), Tripylon<\/em> ve Mylasike Pyle<\/em> (Mylasa Kap\u0131s\u0131). Stratonikeia kenti \u00fc\u00e7 ya da d\u00f6rt savunma b\u00f6lgesine ayr\u0131lm\u0131\u015f olabilir. Bu b\u00f6lgelerin amblemleri, Herakles, Rhopalon, Elephas ve Kapros birliklerinden olu\u015fan Stratonikeia Ordusunu ve ordu birliklerini temsil etmekteydi. Astragon ve Tendeba, Stratonikeia savunma sisteminin par\u00e7as\u0131yd\u0131. Sadece Livius, Stratonikeia Khora<\/em>\u2019s\u0131ndaki bu kalelerden bahsetmi\u015ftir.<\/p>\r\n
