Abstract: In this paper two new funerary inscriptions discovered in the necropolis area called E1 during the 2022 survey conducted in the city of Termessus are introduced. Both inscriptions belong to the Roman Imperial Period. However according to the nomen gentilicum employed in the inscriptions, the first is dated to before, while the latter is dated after the Constitutio Antoniniana (212 A.D.). The first inscription is by Anodriges; the second inscription was erected by the freed slave Aurelius Agathemeros. One of the names mentioned in the first inscription, Anodriges is for the first time documented at Termessus. While the second inscription is written in the form often documented at Termessus; the curse part of the first inscription is documented for the first time in this inscription. The penalty treasury of both inscriptions points to the temple of Zeus Solymeus and the penalty amounts are the same (1000 drakhmai).

Keywords: Termessus, Zeus Solymeus, Epitaph

Abstract: In this article, a total of eight Nicaean doctors, six known from Nikaia and its territorium, one from Thessalia and one from Rome, are presented. These previously published inscriptions are reassembled and studied, with an emphasis upon the Nicaean doctors. In addition, the movement of doctors to different regions is examined and the fact that the profession of medicine is a tradition passed from father to son is highlighted from the inscriptions, with the inscription of Peisistratos and Apollodotos and their families providing a good example of this tradition. It was also considered remarkable that the inscription found in Thessalia does not carry the name of the grave owner, but refers to his profession and emphasizes it in poetic language. This indicates that these people through indicating their professions in all the grave inscriptions examined, may have emphasized the prestige of this profession.

Abstract: The ancient site of Melli, a neighbouring site to Kremna and Sia in Pisidia, is situated on a high rocky mountain in the Kocaaliler town of Bucak, in the district of Burdur. The site was called Milyas by the early researchers, nevertheless its name is still unknown since there is no inscription found that records the city’s name. The site was probably destroyed by an earthquake since some of the buildings can clearly be seen to have collapsed on their own spots. In 2020-2021 clearing of the overgrowth and some arrangement works were carried out under the presidency of Burdur Archaeology Museum. This article presents four new inscriptions that are found during these cleaning works at Melli. The first inscription is an honorary document of a demiourgos whose statue was erected by his son; the second is a dedication to the Dioscuri; the third is a funerary inscription, and the last, a fragment.

Keywords: Melli, Demiourgos, Dioscuri, Epitaph, Votive and Honorific Inscriptions

Abstract: In this paper, ten funerary inscriptions from the eastern necropolis of Knidos are presented. The inscriptions were unearthed in four different tombs during the excavations and the surveys in the locality of Gıyrap in 2017 and 2021. Six of the inscriptions (no. 1-6) were found reused at the vaulted tomb labelled as “Tomb 1”. Two of the inscriptions (no. 7-8) were unearthed in the ruins of the tomb labelled the “monumental vaulted tomb”. The other two (no. 9-10) of the inscriptions were found in two different tombs near the “monumental vaulted tomb”. The inscription no. 1 is the Latin epitaph of Cassius Liberalius, the centurio of the VIIth Gemina Legion. The other nine inscriptions are Greek epitaphs of Tullia Antiokhis (no. 2), Publius Flavius Epitynkhanon (no. 3), Ofellius Euporistos (no. 4), Kharis (no. 5), Zosime, Athenis, Flavius Soterikhos, Aphrodisios and [n.n.] (no. 6), Gaius Iulius Harpokras (no. 7), Epagathos (no. 8), Kleuphanes (no. 9), [n.n.], Philtatos and Arkhias (no. 10). The inscriptions are dated to different periods between the Ist century B.C. and the IVth century A.D. The personal names Antiokhis, Epitynkhanon, Kharis, Athenis and Kleuphanes are here attested for the first time in inscriptions from Knidos.

Öz: Makalede Knidos’un doğu nekropolünden on yeni mezar yazıtı tanıtılmaktadır. Yazıtlar, 2017 ve 2021 yıllarında Gıyrap mevkisinde yürütülen kazılar ve yüzey araştırmaları sırasında dört farklı mezarda ele geçmiştir. Yazıtlardan altı tanesi (no. 1-6) “Mezar 1” olarak isimlendirilen tonozlu mezarda yeniden kullanılmış olarak bulunmuştur. İki yazıt (no. 7-8) “Tonozlu Anıt Mezar” olarak tanımlanan mezar yapısının yıkıntıları arasında ortaya çıkartılmıştır. Diğer iki yazıt ise (no. 9-10) Tonozlu Anıt Mezar’ın yakınındaki iki farklı mezarda ele geçmiştir. Yazıt no. 1, VII. Gemina Lejyonu’nun centurio’su Cassius Liberalius’a ait Latince bir mezar yazıtıdır. Diğer dokuz yazıt Hellencedir, bunlar; Tullia Antiokhis (no. 2), Publius Flavius Epitynkhanon (no. 3), Ofellius Euporistos (no. 4), Kharis (no. 5), Zosime, Athenis, Flavius Soterikhos, Aphrodisios ve [n.n.] (no. 6), Gaius Iulius Harpokras (no. 7), Epagathos (no. 8), Kleuphanes (no. 9) ve [n.n.], Philtatos ve Arkhias (no. 10) isimli kişilere ait mezar yazıtlarıdır. Yazıtlar MÖ I. yüzyıl ile MS IV. yüzyıl arasında farklı dönemlere tarihlenmektedir. Şahıs isimleri Antiokhis, Epitynkhanon, Kharis, Athenis ve Kleuphanes, Knidos yazıtlarında ilk kez belgelenmiştir..

Abstract: This paper concerns 8 ancient Greek inscriptions discovered during the course of surveys at Philadelphia (modern Alaşehir/Manisa), one of the significant cities of Lydia. Even though the insciptions were transcribed in miniscule lettering and roughly edited by SEG editors based upon the majuscule forms provided by the survey team in their research report, their full edition has not as yet been accomplished. In no. 1, a high-priestess (arkhierea) whose name remains unknown due to the break on the stone is honoured. That the woman is mentioned as the high-priestess of the gods of the fatherland is striking and the authors stress that what is meant by this expression should be θεοί πατρώοι / πάτριοι. No. 2 is dedicated to Thea Megale by a certain Lindos, No. 3 is dedicated to Hephaistos by a person whose name is partly preserved on the stone. No. 4 is a dedication by Curtia Iulia Valentilla, a woman of consular rank. In this article, all the epigraphical data concerning this woman are compiled and evaluated. Nos. 5-6 and 8 are in a fragmentary condition and therefore their full content cannot be deduced. No. 7 is a fragment belonging to a funerary epigram. Although the content of the inscription is not entirely known, it is yet another example of the theme treated in the epigrams, i.e. the souls of the deceased being accepted by the sky.

Keywords: Philadelphia, Lydia, Ancient Greek Inscriptions, Epigram, Thea Megale, Hephaistos

1 no’lu yazıtta taşın ilgili yerinin kırık olmasından dolayı ismi okunamayan bir başrahibe (arkhierea) onurlandırılmaktadır.

Abstract: There has been very little study of Yalova and its surroundings since the excavations carried on in the 1930’s. Besides the small rescue excavations carried out by Museums, there are archaeological materials gathered through construction activities and even from the earthquake and “grave stelae” are among them. “Grave Stelae with Altar” form a unique local and distinctive group among these stelae. There is a typical iconographical pattern to be noticed among these examples, as the entire group decorated with the popular theme of “the funeral feast”. There are inscriptions on seven of these stelae. Epigraphically, there is also a common language. The finds suggest the use of these stelae, eleven represented in this paper, was limited to within the region of Yalova. Although, unfortunately, the lack of studies prevents the localization of production, for now, it is possible to suggest from literary sources that these stelae should have been produced in Pylai.

Keywords: Bithynia, Yalova, Grave Stele, Funeral Feast, Iconography, Epigraphy

Abstract: The aim of this article is to revise and re-edit an inscription dating to the Roman Imperial Period found in the ancient city of Rhodiapolis, situated in the Kumluca district of Antalya province, Turkey. The inscription, which is a dedication by Herakleitos of Rhodiapolis, was found in the ancient city of Rhodiapolis, in the southeast of Teke Peninsula, Lycia in antiquity. Rhodiapolis, a site termed by locals “Gavuristan’’, was a member of the ancient Lycian League. Herakleitos, who was a priest, doctor, poet as well as a philosopher, was a citizen of Rhodiapolis whose fame exceeded the boundaries of this small town. He was known and honoured in some of the most important cities of the empire. The inscription in question, which is now lost, is yet another dedication by Herakleitos himself, which states that he had built a temple and erected statues of gods and goddesses.

Keywords: Herakleitos, Rhodiapolis, Lycia, Inscription, TAM II 911
